How do I make a automotive stencil?

I am painting an XBox 360 controller for a friend and I want to make a stencil for it. I am using automotive paint and I’m wondering how do I make an automotive stencil. Ive seen shows on TV where they use a kind of tape or something and put it on the car, then they cut out the part not used for the stencil, spray the paint over the stencil, the peel off the stencil. So if anyone knows what type of tape this is, or any tips for doing it, I’d greatly appreciate it.
I used paint for bumpers after I used adhesion promoter and a primer, but the contact paper seems like its what im looking for
